spo-comm and the Nuremberg Digital Festival – A review

On the 16th of July everything at spo-comm was about "AI AI Captain! CUDA goes artificial intelligence". The spo-comm was wrapped in the yellow color of the Nuremberg Digital Festival for the whole day. In addition to Norbert Kuperjans, from PC Partner, who led us through the impressive and interesting history of graphics cards and CUDA, Christian Bahrendt from Advertima AG was also on-site as speaker and presented their AI of the same name.

It’s Tuesday. A big "X" marks the calender at the 16th of July 2019. It wasn’t a usual Tuesday. It was Digital Festival Time at the spo-comm GmbH. Both, excitement and enthusiasm was in the air. The tools in the production hall of spo-comm were still as neatly sorted as on the day before. There was pure silence. If a screw with a metric ISO standard thread M6 (according to DIN 13-1) fell on the floor, you would’ve been able to hear it.

Jokings aside! ARRRRRR! "AI AI Captain!" was THE event. A big big thank you to everyone who visited us! For one day we dedicated ourselves to Nvidias programming technique "CUDA" as well as Artificial Intelligence as part of the Nuremberg Digital Festival.

Here is a short review of the day:

10:15 am:

The food truck arrives at spo-comm. Chana Masala and Hungarian goulash was the prediction for the lunch break. The team of razz & rübe should conjure up love in our stomachs on this day!

10:30 am:

The first participants of our event arrive.

10:45 am:

The event begins! Welcome to "AI AI Captain! CUDA goes Artificial Intelligence"! spo-comm was giving a brief introduction and a preview of the lectures of the meetup.

11:00 am:

Company founder and CEO Michael Sporrer introduces the spo-comm GmbH. Surely, one or the other previously had wondered what the Mini-PC experts actually had in common with CUDA and Artificial Intelligence. After the instructions in the services and products of spo-comm, things probably were clear. We don’t want to give the game away here, but suffice to say that it has something to do with our KUMO IV and its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060.

11:15 am:

Showtime! Norbert Kuperjans from PC Partner takes over the scepter. Charmingly as always and with a touch of Northern German humour, we were allowed to accompany Norbert on a journey through the history of the graphics card: “From a drawing slave to supercomputing”. Quite fitting, right? We agree with you. At eye level, the technology specialist explained the audience what the cores’ job in both, CPUs and GPUs, is and why a CPU comparatively to a GPU has few cores, but also why that is alright as it is. At the heart of his lecture was Nvidia’s programming technique CUDA. Whoever missed that does not have to be sad. Similarly many endorphins as Norbert’s lecture are distributed when reading our blog article about CUDA.

11:45 am:

We reached the break. Wait, did somebody say Chana Masala? YES! We were so glad that we had the guys from razz & rübe at our event. Mhhhhhhh, it was so delicious! Our participants were networking, sharing knowledge and chilling under the sun. There aren’t many better scenarios, are there? Ok ok, you’re right. There are some. Like enjoying a cool drink on Hawaii, at the beach. But that’s it basically.

12:45 pm:

After the break we continued with Christian Bahrendt’s presentation about Artificial Intelligence and the big question about how to connect the offline- with the online-world. With some basic knowledge about CUDA and graphic cards, the listeners were initially asked the question: "What does it actually mean, when the physical space suddenly consists of data?". The Advertima AG is faced with this question like every single day. Since the Artificial Intelligence of the Swiss start-up company of the same name does exactly that: It transforms people and their environment into data. But Artificial Intelligence would not be what it is if we were talking only about rigid analysis and data-hoarding. Advertima is self-learning. The so-called "machine-learning" enables the software to develop on the basis of already analyzed data. In Advertima’s case, this means targeting and displaying advertisements for customers where they might be interested. More quality content leads to more impressions leads to more conversions. Not just an exciting topic, but also the future. Curious about more from Advertima? Check out our reference about the leading Swiss company.

13:15 pm:

The event ends. Time for networking and a few kicker matches. What a great way to start in a relaxed afternoon.

Without talking about the bush: It was a great event. Thanks to everyone who were there and made the event an unforgettable day for us. Last but not least also a big thank you to our reliable and competent event technology partner pave who ensured that everything went smooth.

Norbert Kuperjans from PC Partner

PC Partner is a leading manufacturer of computer electronics based in Hong Kong. The main products of the company are graphics cards, motherboards and Mini-PCs. As one of the industry leaders, PC Partner leverages its exceptional R & D capabilities and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities to continually bring new products and innovations to market. The goal of PC Partner is to stay one step ahead of the industry.

Norbert Kuperjans always had his fingers in the pie wherever a graphics card was not far away. From his first job at NEC Germany GmbH as an application engineer in the area of displays and graphics cards to the technical marketing employee at ATI Technologies (today AMD). During nearly 10 years at ATI, Norbert and his team had been able to establish the ATI and Radeon brands in gaming, and have inspired most of the PC manufacturers for the Radeon graphics. In recent years at ATI, he headed the Technical Marketing Department and was an authorized representative of ATI Technologies Europe GmbH. After ATI no longer marketed graphics cards, but only the GPUs, it has pulled him to PC Partner in Hong Kong, the manufacturer of ATI graphics cards. As a business development employee, he and PC Partner were initially able to win back the PC manufacturers for the PC Partner graphics cards. After a few years, the portfolio was expanded to graphics cards from NVIDIA. In the further course the portfolio was extended by Mini-PCs for the home and office employment and for 5 years also PCs in the range Embedded, Digital Signage and industrial PCs. A special strength here are the PCs with dedicated graphics, with which PC Partner clearly differentiates itself from the competition with its brand PCP Solutions. Norbert is on board of PC Partner for over 15 years now.

4 Mar 2019 Array ( [id] => 389 [title] => What is CUDA? [authorId] => [active] => 1 [shortDescription] => While launching our new Mini-PCs QUADRO P1000 and TEGRA 2 we already talked a lot about NVIDIA CUDA and the so-called CUDA cores. But what is CUDA actually? [description] =>

What means "CUDA"?

The term CUDA is the acronym of "Compute Unified Device Architecture".

What exactly is CUDA?

CUDA is an NVIDIA architecture for parallel calculations. The computing power of a PC is increased by using the graphics processor as well.
In the past, OpenGL and DirectX were the only way to interact with GPUs, but these APIs were mostly suited for multimedia applications. In contrast, calculations were only performed on the CPU.

Since graphics cards are ideal for computation-intensive, parallel processes, new operating systems (Windows 7 and up) no longer use GPUs only for graphics calculations, but as a general-purpose parallel processor that can be accessed by any application. Like that, calculations run parallel on the CPU and the graphics processor, which increases the performance enormously. NVIDIA CUDA supports this and enables easy and efficient parallel computing. There are now thousands of applications, countless research reports and a wide selection of CUDA tools and solutions.

What is a CUDA core?

Usually, CUDA cores are considered equivalent to CPU cores. However, the CUDA cores are less complex and at the same time appear in much larger numbers. While the usual Intel CPUs have between 2 and 8 cores, for example, the NVIDIA Quadro P1000, which is installed in our identically named Mini-PC, has 640 CUDA cores. High-End graphics cards, such as NVIDIA’s Turing generation, often have over 4000 cores. This high number is necessary because often many complex graphics calculations have to be performed simultaneously. However, since GPUs are specialized for this purpose, the cores are also constructed much more specific and are therefore smaller than the cores of CPUs.

A detailed explanation of this topic can be found at Gamingscan. If you want to get even deeper into the topic and are interested in the exact difference between CUDA cores and CPU cores, you should check out the video "Why CUDA 'Cores' Aren’t Actually Cores" from Gamers Nexus.

In which areas is CUDA used?

CUDA is used in a variety of fields. On the one hand in image and video processing, but also in the medical field, for example in CT image reconstructions. The fields AI, deep learning and machine learning also often rely on CUDA, because they require sophisticated development environments. Other topics include computer biology and chemistry, raytracing, seismic analysis and more.

Which is the current version of CUDA?

Since CUDA was introduced in 2006, it has evolved enormously. In October 2018, CUDA 10 was unveiled, along with the launch of the new Turing GPUs. More information about the new features can be found on the NVIDIA Developer Blog.

How is CUDA programmed?

When using CUDA, the programming languages C, C++, Fortran, Python and MATLAB can be used.

How can CUDA be used?

With CUDA you can work under Windows, Linux and MacOS – given that you have the right hardware. These are the graphics cards of the NVIDIA series GeForce, Quadro and Tesla as well as NVIDIA GRID solutions. An overview of CUDA enabled GPUs can be found on NVIDIA’s website. The CUDA Toolkit can be found there as well.
