10 years of cooperation

The cooperation between spo-comm – located in Nuremberg – and MSI IPC, which is the Industrial-PC department of the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer Micro Star International (MSI), exists already for 10 years now.

For some time past it is usual that the spo-comm management team visits MSI IPC once a year. So this October after 14 hours of flying, a travel duration of about 18 hours and a halfway overcome jetlag due to 7 hours time difference, the long-desired meeting with the contact persons of MSI IPC took place.

Successful models remain

In such meeting there is a lot that has to be talked about. But what is definitely sure: the partnership promises a lot of new models! The spo-comm and MSI IPC are constantly working on new Mini-PCs that suit the high claims of our customers. Product series such as the BRICK, NOVA and the well-known best seller WINDBOX yet convince our customers of the high quality PCs that come out of this cooperation.

We are looking forward to continue the cooperation with MSI IPC and the new upcoming projects!

The successful models of this cooperation:

•    WINDBOX II Quad
•    WINDBOX III EVO  (NEW!)
•    NOVA Q170  (NEW!)

The namesake graphics card and the Intel® Core i5-7300U CPU with 2.6 and up to 3.5 GHz make the Mini-PC a perfect partner for digital signage applications. [description] =>

Nvidia Quadro P1000 with MOSAIC support

As the name suggests, the Nvidia Quadro P1000 graphics card with a 4 GB DDR5 memory builds the centerpiece of the Mini-PC. The main feature of this card is the MOSAIC support: using the four HDMI ports up to four displays can be combined to one single desktop. The highlight is: even if one cabled is pulled off the apposition of the screens stays the same.

Nvidias Nview and CUDA support

Another very interesting feature is the function Nview. With this tool, which is by the way standard with every Nvidia Geforce graphics card, desktops can be created more efficiently. Nview is made for everyone that works with a lot of different windows or a huge amount of information at the same time. On one hand the work can be spreaded on many monitors, so that the open windows are not sticked to just one display. On the other hand Nview also has a solution for the use of one display: virtual desktops can be created and toggled between by keystroke.

Furthermore the QUADRO P1000 provides a CUDA platform. Thanks to 640 cores in total, which are based on the Pascal GPU, many different visualization programs, for instance CAD, are easier to realize.

Connector diversity by 3x USB and 4x HDMI

The latest model QUADRO P1000 is equipped with a high amount of different interfaces. On the front panel of the Mini-PC the power button and two control lights for the HDD/SSD and the WiFi can be found (see also “What is the difference between HDD and SSD?” and “What is LAN?”). One of the four USB 3.0 ports, two audio connectors and an SD card reader are also located on the front.

Next to two Gigabit LAN ports the back panel provides four HDMI ports that enable the multi monitor use. With these interfaces four displays with a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 @60Hz (4K) can be controlled at once (see also “What is the difference between 4K and 8K?”). Combining the multi monitor ability with the new feature Nview, the QUADRO P1000 becomes the perfect workstation solution. In addition to this, the back of the Mini-PC also holds a COM port, two Antenna ports and an SPDIF, which involves benefits mostly for the stereo field (see also “What is SPDIF?”).

Energy saving Intel® CPU and customizable configuration

The actively cooled spo-book QUADRO P1000 is equipped with an Intel® Core i5-7300U CPU, that has a performance of 2.6 GHz up to 3.5 GHz. The “U” in the CPUs name stands for “Ultralow” and an energy saving 15 W processor (read more about TDP here). The Mini-PC can be stocked with up to 32 GB DDRIV Ram and either an HDD or an SSD. It can also be chosen between the different Windows 10 versions Home, Professional and IoT. Due to the integrated M.2 slot it is also possible to equip the system with WiFi and Bluetooth.

Technical details:

  • CPU: Intel® Core i5-7300U, 2.6 GHz up to 3.5 GHz and 15W TDP
  • GPU: Nvidia Quadro P1000 with 4GB DDR5 memory
  • Dimensions (W x H x D): 210 x 44.4 x 176.6 mm
  • Max. resolution: 3840 x 2160 @60Hz (4K)
  • Image output on up to 4 displays due to 4x HDMI
  • 3x USB 3.0 and 2x LAN

Remaining issue with Intel CPUs, AMD’s rising market share and eMMC in the IPC-field [authorId] => [active] => 1 [shortDescription] => At the end of this year we have some important topics that will attend us in the upcoming year. On one hand we want to explain the recent problems with the Intel CPUs. On the other hand we want to introduce you to AMD Ryzen and the eMMC hard disk. [description] =>

Intel’s CPU issue remains

We already mentioned the general shortage of electronic components in our last “What’s New?”-article. This affected mainly DRAM memory chips and passive components such as MLCC condensers. What complicates the whole situation now is the issue with the Intel CPUs.

In a statement Intel’s CEO announced that the company did not reckon with such a high request. As a result of this the whole electronic field is suffering from the enormous shortage of almost every sixth, seventh and eighth generation CPU. This also leads to an immense price increase.

It is still unsure how this is going to continue. We at spo-comm try to intercept the price increases in your as well as in our own self-interest. We kindly advise our customers to arrange the yet planned projects with us as soon as possible.

AMD Ryzen gains market shares

In the third quarter of 2018 AMD again gains in the field of x86-processors and therefore has more than 10 percent market share. Especially in the sector of mobile processors the company grows. Here the percentage rises for about 4.1 percentage points to almost 11%. And also considering desktop PCs AMD shows off with a market share of 13 percent.

eMMC: space-saving taught by smartphones

Where some time ago there was only the classic HDD, we nowadays have some alternatives to choose from. The most popular is the SSD (Solid State Disk). What exactly differs these two kinds of hard disks you can read in this article.

Meanwhile also “eMMC” is often talked about. But what exactly is this? eMMC stands for “Embedded Multi Media Card”. It is a storage medium that is constructed like the MMC standard. Thanks to its energy conservation, the space saving construction and the technical similarity to an SD card, the eMMC is mostly used in compact mobile devices.

Even though the storage capacity of eMMC is only 16 GB to 128 GB, the price is clearly under the price of SSDs. Comparing an eMMC and an HDD the eMMC really has its advantages in transferring 4K content.

Our latest Mini-PC the spo-book BOX N4100 that will be released next week is also equipped with a 32 GB eMMC flash memory. Due to its HDMI and DisplayPort interface the embedded PC is mostly used as a digital signage player for simple 4K applications.
