What is PoE – Power over Ethernet?

Power over Ethernet, or short “PoE”, stands for a standardized procedure with which networkable devices can be supplied with power. This procedure offers a comfortable method of just having to use one cable for the power and network connection.

How does PoE work?

More and more devices – such as our spo-book RUGGED Q170 – are Power over Ethernet-ready. Not only does Ethernet occupy a leading position for local network cabling but also for security networks. By using Power over Ethernet, a separate power connection and a power adapter are no longer needed. Instead, the device gets its power over the data network. In addition to the data signals, power is also fed into the data line – usually at a central point in the network distributor.

Where is Power over Ethernet used?

PoE canis mostly be found in devices that normally have to be connected to different sockets with different connectors. Above all, Power over Ethernet is a suitable solution for applications that need high security regarding the data connection, for instance in (surveillance) cameras or servers.

Which PoE standards are there and what are the PoE classes?

Today, PoE is mostly referred to as the IEEE 802.3af-2003 standard (“DTE Power over MDI”), which was adopted in June 2003. There’s also the newer standard IEEE 802.3at-2009 that was previously known as PoE+ or PoE plus. The new one increases the maximum power output from 15.4 W to 25.5 W.
All devices powered by PoE or PoE+ are assigned a class of 0 to 4, which depends on the amount of power that the device consumes. The devices assigned to the classes 1, 2 and 3 require very little, little or an average amount of power, whereas class 4 (PoE+) requires a large amount of power and is only compatible with PoE+ PSE devices. Once a Powered Device (PD) is connected to a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) device, it sends the class to the PSE device so it can provide the right amount of power.

What are the advantages of Poe?

The main advantage of Power over Ethernet is that a power cable is not needed. This makes it possible to install Ethernet-connected devices even in hard-to-reach places, such as server cabinets. On the one hand, this saves on installation costs, and on the other hand, the reliability of the device can be increased by implementing a central uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

RUGGED Q170 stays outdoor and goes Vehicle Computing

Just like the previous versions in the RUGGED series the spo-book RUGGED Q170 is best equipped for the outdoor field. Without any problems the Mini-PC can handle an extended temperature range from -40° Celsius up to +70° Celsius. With its passive cooling system and the robust metal housing the inner workings are perfectly protected from any environmental influences like dust and humidity. Besides the long known application under harsh conditions the spo-book RUGGED Q170 with its size of 250 x 55 x 150 mm is also made for the use in vehicles - thanks to its wide-range input (9 – 36 Volts), with which the Mini-PC can absorb surges. Furthermore the Industry PC is vibration and shock tested according to the American military standard – just like our MOVE series.

Flexibility due to the modular plug-in system

With the spo-book RUGGED Q170 it is possible to easily extend the amount of the interfaces. Due to the optional LAN module the four LAN ports can be enlarged to eight, which allows even complex network applications.

By using PoE (Power over Ethernet; see also "What is PoE?") there’s also the possibility to supply the four modularly expendable LAN ports with electricity. It is especially beneficial for the surveillance sector because with this feature it is possible to control up to four surveillance cameras – for example in the subway or at an airport – with only one Mini-PC.

Two Display Ports and a VGA connection allow independent image output on up to three monitors. Thanks to its Intel® HD Graphics 530 and the two Display Ports, even an output of 2 x 4K@60Hz is possible. In combination with its robustness the RUGGED Q170 is an interesting solution for the area of (outdoor) digital signage.

For those who don’t want to rely on just one network provider, you can also implement a multi SIM card in the spo-book RUGGED Q170. Thus, a broad network spectrum ensures that the industrial PC is always connected to a network.

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a chip that is integrated into many systems and offers more security. It is used primarily in PCs, notebooks, mobile phones, but also in entertainment electronics. A device with TPM, adapted operating system and suitable software is called trusted computing platform (abbr.: TC platform).

What are the advantages of TPM?

The advantages of TPM are security and encryption as well as the identification of devices. For example, each chip contains a unique cryptographic key by which the computer can be identified – only if the owner allows reading it out.
In addition, cryptographic keys can be stored in the TPM in order to save encrypted data outside of the TPM. The keys are generated, used and securely stored within the TPM, so they are protected against software attacks. Other benefits include better licensing and data protection. The owner of the system can sign data to prove his origin. In addition, changes to the system can be detected using the TPM that have been made for example by malicious programs or by users.

What keys are used in the TPM?

The Endorsement Key (EK) is an RSA key pair (the abbreviation RSA stands for the three mathematicians Rivest, Shamier and Adleman, who developed this cryptographic method) and is specifically assigned to each TPM. The key length is 2048 bits. The RSA key pair consists of a private key that never leaves the TPM and decrypts or signs data, as well as a public key used to encrypt and check signatures. The key can be created outside of the TPM and can also be deleted and re-created.

The Storage Root Key (SRK) is created when an admin or user takes over the systems, that means, that the owner of the computer changes. The SRK is also an RSA key with a length of 2048 bits. As the name implies, the SRK is the root of the TPM key tree as it encrypts other keys used.

The Attestation Identity Keys (AIKs) are RSA keys with a length of 2048 bits. They are created using the Endorsement Keys and protect the privacy of the user. The AIKs can somehow be seen as a pseudonym for the EK, so that is can remain anonymous.

How can TPM be used?

The TPM chip, which is integrated into the hardware, is of course crucial for the use of TPM. This is partly inherently on the motherboard; alternatively the module can often be optionally installed, if a TPM header is present. However, the right software is required in order to use TPM. To protect the software from easy manipulation, a secure operating system such as Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is recommended.

Which spo-comm Mini-PCs offer TPM?

In the spo-comm systems spo-book WINDBOX III Advanced, spo-book NOVA CUBE Q87 and spo-book BOX N2930, a TPM chip is actually integrated (TPM 1.2). The successor of the spo-book WINDBOX III Advanced will be released in the third quarter of 2017 and will include the new TPM 2.0, which was published in 2014. In addition, TPM can be optionally installed in the systems spo-book TURO Q87, spo-book EXPANDED Q170 and spo-book NINETEEN Q170.

Digital Signage

Digital Signage (kurz: DS, deutsch: Digitale Beschilderung) beschreibt die Wiedergabe von Medieninhalten auf Bildschirmen, Leinwänden, Schildern, und vieles mehr. Wohl eines der bekanntesten Beispiele für digitale Werbung ist der Times Square in New York. Bei Digital Signage Playern ist nicht nur die Größe sondern auch die Leistungsfähigkeit der Mini-PCs enorm wichtig. Nicht nur, dass die Lösungen meist direkt in den Displays verbaut werden, sie müssen oft auch performant genug sein um 4K-Inhalte auf einem oder mehreren Bildschirmen wiedergeben zu können.

Maschinensteuerung

Ob nun Fräsmaschinen, Fahrzeugwaagen auf dem Wertstoffhof oder automatisierte Lagersysteme. In der Industrie ist die meiste Maschinerie an Mini-PCs gekoppelt um entweder Informationen zur Weiterverarbeitung aufzunehmen, oder Daten zur Informationsverwertung abzugeben. Aufgrund der meist rauen Arbeitsumgebung (Staub, Sägespäne, feuchte Luft, Außeninstallationen) sind passiv gekühlte Industrie-PCs ein verlässlicher Partner.

Music-Player

Egal wo man heute einkaufen geht - Supermärkte, Autohäuser oder im Klamottengeschäft - überall wird man von passender und wohlklingender Musik berieselt. Auch hier dienen, wer hätte es gedacht, Mini-PCs als Grundlage für die Wiedergabe der Songs. Die Langlebigkeit, Energieeffizienz, sowie die kompakte Bauart der PC-Systeme sind hier die Hauptgründe für den Einsatz. Ein Paradebeispiel für ein solches System ist das spo-book WINDBOX II Quad (lüfterlos).

Kiosk Terminals

Am Flughafen, Bahnhof, bei der Bank oder auf Messen. Tag täglich begegnen wir Kiosk-Systemen, holen uns über sie Informationen oder arbeiten mit ihnen. Auch wenn man dabei eher das Gefühl hat, man arbeite mehr mit einem Display, verbergen sich unter den Bildschirmen (meist Touch-Displays) 24/7-fähige Mini-PCs. Die Systemlösungen der spo-comm stellen nicht nur entsprechende Software bereit um den Anwender glücklich zu machen, sondern müssen auch in der Lage sein bei den schlechten Abwärme-Bedingungen der Stele auf angemessene Betriebstemperaturen herunter zu kühlen.

Vehicle Computing

Wie der Name schon andeutet bezeichnet Vehicle Computing die Verwendung von Mini-PCs in Fahrzeugen aller Art. Unter anderem in Krankenwägen, Polizeiautos, Schiffen oder öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln.  In all den genannten Beispielen befinden sich Steuerungseinheiten die wiederum auf die kleinen Vehicle-PCs angewiesen sind.

Einzelhandel

Zum einen begegnen uns Mini-PCs in Supermärkten im Bereich des Digital Signage (siehe oben). Zum anderen finden sie aber auch an den Kassen ihre Verwendung. So werden unter anderem Scanner und Bildschirme mit den, meist passiv gekühlten, Embedded-PCs verbunden und bilden so die übliche Arbeitsumgebung.

Logistik und Produktion

Gerade im Bereich der Lagerhaltung und der Produktion erfüllen Mini-PCs gleich an mehreren Stellen ihren Zweck. Wie bereits oben genannt in der Maschinensteuerung und der Verarbeitung von Informationen, aber auch zur Diagnose von Fehlerquellen, beispielsweise am Fließband. So kann es vorkommen, dass ein Fließband nicht mehr läuft, weil irgendwo etwas klemmt und verhindert, dass das Band in Bewegung bleibt. Der Mini-PC sorgt dann dafür, dass entsprechende Software ungehindert ihre Arbeit verrichten kann und Fehler ohne Verzögerung beseitigt werden können. Bürobetrieb

Selbstverständlich haben Mini-PCs ihren originären Zweck nicht hinter sich gelassen. Auch in Büros werden immer mehr der PC-Systeme eingesetzt. Sie sind nicht nur platzsparend, sondern auch wesentlich stromsparender als herkömmliche Desktop-PCs. Passiv gekühlte Lösungen tragen zudem zu einer leisen und angenehmeren Arbeitsatmosphäre bei. Aufgrund seiner technischen Spezifikationen ist bei unseren Kunden beispielsweise das spo-book WINDBOX III Advanced eine beliebte Produktlösung.
