Product change in Vehicle Computing: spo-book MOVE QM77 is EOL

Our spo-book MOVE QM77, a vehicle-PC with fanless cooling, is pulled from the store and is replaced by the new spo-book MOVE QM87.

In order to bring vehicle computing up to date, spo-comm has taken the MOVE QM77 from the range. In its place comes the MOVE QM87 with an Intel Core i5 of the fourth generation.

More connections with same dimensions

The dimensions of the Mini-PC are unchanged and amount to 55 x 250 x 150 millimeters. On the housing, however, we placed more connections. Instead of three, there are now four COM interfaces, two of which are RS422/485. In addition to DVI-I and DisplayPort, the spo-book MOVE QM87 also has a VGA port, so that up to three screens can be connected. Since we are still dealing with a classic Vehicle-PC, the 9-36 V Wide Range power connector, the optional battery and the Mini-PCIe Sots for expansion cards were of course maintained.

Increase in performance

Although the CPU of the new spo-book MOVE QM87 is "just" an Intel Core i5, it is of the fourth generation (Haswell) and therefore more up to date than the Intel Core i7 (third generation, Ivy Bridge) of the MOVE QM77. Therefore the two processors are not only comparable in performance, but the i5 even exceeds the i7 even in most benchmarks, as this comparison shows. In addition to the raise in performance, memory can also be increased. Instead of eight, with the spo-book MOVE QM87 up to 16 gigabytes of RAM are possible.

Although the spo-book MOVE QM77 is EOL, spo-comm still supplies existing projects. And if less power is needed: our "small" vehicle-PCs spo-book MOVE NM10 and MOVE T56N will also be updated shortly.

Vehicle Computing by spo-comm

As the name suggests, the MOVE Series is a classic for use in vehicles of all kinds. Special transformers, optional batteries and numerous modules for mobile applications (3G/4G, GPS) ensure smooth operation in every imaginable vehicle. Thanks to passive heat management and particularly robust construction, usage within an extended temperature range of-40°C to 70°C is no problem.

Mini-PC with Masses of Content

The inner workings of the typically compact industrial PCs provides a few surprises, with numerous options that propel vehicle computing to a new level. In the rugged and fanless metal casing measuring 250x55x150mm, there’s space for up to two HDDs or SSDs as well as modules for mobile networking (3G/4G), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Thanks to the dual SIM slot, it’d even possible to use two completely separate mobile networks.

[authorId] => [active] => 1 [shortDescription] => A normal desktop PC is not the best solution to use in a car, which should be clear to everyone. We have summarized, why Mini-PCs are the better choice and what special features they need aside from that. [description] =>

What are features of a Vehicle-PC?

A Mini-PC that is suitable for the use in vehicles is characterized by various factors. First, Vehicle-PCs should have no moving parts to endure shock and vibration easily. Therefore, they have fanless cooling, and ideally an SSD is installed instead of an HDD. The robust design and a completely enclosed housing also protect against dust and moisture. In order to bear the voltage spikes of starting the engine of a car, a Vehicle-PC requires a wide range input of 9-36 volts, sometimes even up to 48 volts. Furthermore, a compact design is advantageous because the space available in vehicles is limited. Mini-PCs are therefore always the first choice. An extended temperature range is also important as Vehicle-PCs are used outdoor and thus should be able to withstand minus degrees and heat.

Depending on the area of application, Vehicle-PCs can additionally be equipped with various extensions. These include GPS as well as 3G or 4G modules. Some PCs even offer two SIM card slots, which significantly improve the availability in the mobile network. If you want to prevent a sudden shutdown of the PC, for example, by stalling the engine, you can get a battery pack, which supplies the PC for another 10 minutes of power and thus can prevent data loss.

Where are Vehicle-PCs used?

The application areas for Vehicle-PCs are diverse. Examples are emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, police cars or customs vehicles. In addition, mobile operating centers and mobile monitoring platforms can be equipped with vehicle-compatible Mini-PCs. Vehicle-PCs are also used in vehicle development. In prototypes, for example, they can monitor, measure and check the processes while driving. Autonomous driving requires Vehicle-PCs with enormous computing power. Images of several cameras as well as measurement results of different sensors have to be evaluated and processed with artificial intelligence and deep learning. Another area of application is digital signage and infotainment. On buses, trains, subways and even taxis, screens with news, weather forecasts and advertising are commonplace.

Which Vehicle-PCs offers spo-comm?

In spo-comm’s product catalogue everyone finds the suitable product for his specific vehicle application. The Vehicle-PCs include the models of the MOVE series: the MOVE N3160 and, for those who need a bit more power, the MOVE QM87. The newer models of the RUGGED series are as well suitable for the use in vehicles: the RUGGED Q170, the RUGGED Ryzen on AMD basis and our RUGGED GTX1060 Ti, which is equipped with an NVIDIA Geforce graphics card and allows multi-monitor applications.

Certified Vehicle-PC

The spo-book MOVE N3160 is the latest model in the passively cooled MOVE series, which has been specially designed for use in all kinds of vehicles. The wide-range power input (9-36 volts), the optional battery for up to ten minutes of emergency operation and various optional additional modules such as 3G/4G or GPS all ensure first-class vehicle computing. In addition, the Mini-PC has been tested to American military standards to be vibration-proof and impact-proof.

Outdoor use in extreme temperatures

The Vehicle-PC with dimensions of just 250 x 55 x 150 millimetres is equipped with a fanless Intel quad-core CPU with four 1.6 (max. 2.24) GHz cores. Thanks to passive cooling, the Mini-PC can be operated in an extended temperature range of -40 to 70 degrees Celsius. This also makes it suitable for outdoor use where heating or cooling options are not available. Furthermore the Mini-PC comes with eight GPIO ports (2 in/2 out DIO) and a dual SIM slot for operation with two independent mobile networks. A CAN bus is also optionally available.
